This week marks 42 years of
sports, joy, and human transformation around
the globe. At the USA National Games in Lincoln,
Nebraska, I’ve gone from venue to venue
meeting athletes like Kolan McConiughey from
Michigan who bowled seven 300 games in his
bowling career, like Nicholas Vandenburgh
from Minnesota who ran the 100 meter under
11 seconds, like Kaitlin Slough from Indiana
who ran a personal best of 6:59 in the mile
run. Their excellence is a reflection of your
perseverance, their achievements - the outcome
of your determination, their happiness - the
product of your relentless passion for the
human spirit. No matter how long you’ve
been with Special Olympics, this is your celebration
too. From all of us, I send you my thanks.
Work
and play - together at last! By

I jumped at the chance (I think I actually did
come out of my chair) of playing a round of golf
at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish last Tuesday
as part of media day for the U.S. Senior Open
that comes up the end of July. I had walked the
course while photographing the PGA tournament
in 1998 so it was great to be on the holes I watched
the pros playing.
In addition to getting on that beautiful
golf course, I played with three quality gentlemen
from Wenatchee - Chad Sangster, Dusty Broderson,
and Dusty's son, Jordan. They were at the event
because Jordan is being honored for winning numerous
Special Olympics state golf tournaments, representing
Special Olympics, a benefactor of the tournament.
It was raining off and on
during the afternoon but nothing could keep all
of us from having a great time. I was able to
get some photographs of Jordan golfing the course
for an upcoming feature about his accomplishments.
He has a very pretty draw to his shot but like
most playing in the event a few shots ended up
in the forest.
4,000 BIKERS COME TOGETHER FOR
SPECIAL OLYMPICS WASHINGTON
NW RIDE OF DREAMS AND CLASSIC CAR SHOW
On
August 28, 2010 it is expected that over 4,000
motorcycles will descend on the historic city
of Ellensburg, Washington, from five primary starting
points across the state of Washington to raise
funds for Special Olympics.
Rotary Park, at 1200 W. 5th in West
Ellensburg, is the site where riders and non riding
participants will converge and greeted by Special
Olympics Washington athletes, friends and family.
A Special Olympics induction ceremony will take
place followed be a community festival comprised
of concessions, vendors, food, entertainment,
raffles, and a Classic Car Show.
David Rose, host of the weekly Q13
Fox television series Washington’s Most
Wanted, will be the master of ceremonies.
Participants, whether they be a
rider or a non-riding participant, must raise
a minimum of $30.00 per person with all proceeds
going to Special Olympics Washington. Those registering
will each receive an official NW Ride of Dreams
t-shirt and goody bag.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run®
(LETR) Campaign is comprised of local law enforcement
agencies throughout the state of Washington and
the organizers of the event which they hope will
raise $100,000 for Special Olympics programs.
Beth Wojick, Special Olympics Washington
CEO, praised the state’s law enforcement
agencies for their ongoing support of Special
Olympics saying “even during some of the
most challenging times in recent memory for law
enforcement, they continue to serve our communities.
Last year events such as the Torchlight Run, Tip-A-Cop,
Polar Plunge and Cops-on-Top of a Donut Shop raised
over $500,000.00 for Special Olympics programming
across the state and we thank them for their support
and their courage”.

Eunice Kennedy Shriver Act Bipartisan Effort. House Majority Leader Steny
Hoyer (D-MD) was among many lawmakers from both
political parties who spoke at a reception in
honor of Eunice Kennedy Shriver during 2010 Capitol
Hill Day. Hoyer led the way to get the bill passed
in the House.
EKS
Act Clears U.S. House of Representatives
On May 19, the U.S. House
of Representatives passed the 2010 Eunice Kennedy
Shriver Act, a renewal of the 2004 Sport and Empowerment
Act which authorized five years of funding for
numerous Special Olympics programs.
The new bill also includes
authorization for grants for Best Buddies International
and the establishment of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver
Institutes for Sport and Social Impact. The bill
will now need to be passed by the U.S. Senate
and signed by President Obama.
